"JOI" arrives at the APOLLO!
The Apollo Music Cafe
The singer Joi arrived in Harlem from Atlanta
last weekend for two amazing late-night shows at the
NEW Apollo Music Cafe located on the Apollo Theater soundstage. One entered the cafe from a side door under the Apollo's marquee and up a flight of steps that made one feel the experience was akin to that of climbing the steps to Harlem's Cotton Club under the marquee of what was then the old Douglas Theater.
Joyously, Joi's cabaret like performance demonstrated that this diva on the rise could conjure the energy, sex appeal and full throttle vocalizing that might rival some of Harlem's divas of the past. And while speaking of divas, where else in NYC within a span of months could one see an array of contemporary black divas as diverse as Helga, Sharon Jones and Joi, but the Apollo!
